The Present

Today morning I was shaving infront of the mirror. My thoughts, instead of concentrating on what I was doing at that moment, were still with something that happened in the office on Friday and I ended up cutting myself with the blade.
Moral of the story: When we don't bury our pasts and start concentrating on our 'Present', we have every chance of hurting ourselves.

The two tamil verses (Incidentally these were NOT written after reading the book) and what happened to me in the morning pretty much summarizes what this book is all about. It highlights the importance of learning from the past, planning for the future but ALWAYS living in the 'Present' by using a simple parable.

Bottom Line: A small book that is worth a read.

Sandhyavandhana, meditation as taught by vivekananda, Maharishi mahesh yogi's(Transcendental meditation), Ramana Maharishi and Osho tells us to live in the present. Meditation is an ancient technique to train our mind to be in the present. Pranayama(preparation for meditation) and Gayathri Japa(meditation) are being taught at an early age for the kids during Sandhyavandana and they are made to follow them. Doing ones sandhyavandana regularly is called `Swadharma Paripaalana'. Infact Adhi shankara's `Vivekachoodamani' is the superset of all the above. I recollect having read a book called `The Power of Now' by Eckhart Toelle. Fantastic book by a western author.

Phil Jackson the legendary NBA coach is a great proponent of meditation. His training methods include regular meditation sessions for his team. One of his famous powerful speeches to the LA Lakers team (Shaq, Kobe and Malone together) when facing defeat against Pistons in the NBA finals was asking them to be in the Present and Now.
